Family Moments: Let’s Have Fun!

Wow! Can you believe the summer months are upon us. School sessions are ending and children will be home. What are your plans? If you are like many, staycations are part of the plan. However, let's consider making each and every day fun and educational.

Who says you have to go out of town to have fun? You can have fun in your home! I may be at risk of dating myself, but I remember the many fun activities we had when growing up that didn't involve tons of money. Water games were the best. Remember the slip and slide? How about a simple sprinkler? Yes, the teens still enjoy water balloon fights and hula hoop contests.

If it's too hot outside, consider some indoor games. Hide and seek is always fun but let's get more active. The electronic games today are becoming quick favorites. Our family enjoys the Wii and not only the games but the work-out you get from simply playing the games. I'm actually still sore from playing tennis with my youngest child and we didn't need to leave the house to play. We simply pulled out the Wii and had a blast!

If you don't have the electronic games you can still have fun. Remember the retro Twister game? Oh my, I'm dating myself again but the fun you can have with that simple game is great. Twisting and turning will also involve some balance and muscle use, so you'll certainly be getting a work-out while having fun.

The entire point of this article is that you can still have fun without spending lots of money and most importantly create wonderful memories for your children. Pull your child off the couch and get active. Take a bike ride, learn to ride a skateboard with them or simply go for walks around the neighborhood.

Let's not forget that the summer months will bring rain showers; take out your rain gear and go for a walk in the rain. Remember jumping in the puddles? Let's share with our children the fun we had when we were young. Show them that you can still have fun even if it means making a fool of yourself. You'll be amazed at the bonding time that is created and the fun you will have.

Your task for this summer is to create some long lasting memories that don't cost much but will last a life time! Enjoy!
