The Human Touch Can Heal

Did you know that the human touch can be healing? It’s true!

Think about it for a second. When you are feeling down or depressed and someone gives you a hug, how do you feel? If you are like most, you start to feel better. It may be due to the fact that someone cared enough to reach out and touch you, literally. Other examples can be easily found in hospitals and nursing homes. When a person is ill, the caring touch of the nurse or family member is essential to the healing process.

When my youngest was born, he was a mere 2lbs 4oz and 10 weeks early. While he was in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) it was advised that I place my hand on his back or tummy as much as possible. Then when he was a bit more stable, I was able to hold him with his entire little body on my chest, skin to skin or kangaroo style as they called it. My touch and that of the other nurses helped him thrive and fight to live. Now he is a healthy and rambunctious little 8 year-old boy!

The same occurs in relationships. For relationships to last longer, we must show our love and affection and what better way than to cuddle. Both men and women benefit from the touch of a loved one and don’t let a ‘macho’ guy tell you any different. The human touch is truly remarkable and without a doubt truly has a healing effect.

So…reach out and touch someone…you may be helping them more than you realize.

What a good reminder, it’s amazing too how simply imagining holding hands with my hubby or sitting close to him makes me relax. I like it!

I love this blog post. I think it will be very helpful in interacting with my daughter-in-law who has been dealing with the after effects of cancer and trying to regain her health and her life which has been very difficult for her. I’m not a real touchy person so it doesn’t come instinctively to me, so this very helpful to make me aware of how important that can be. She lost her mom a few years before her cancer diagnosis so I feel it’s even more important for me to be like a “mom” to her and I’ve been lacking there :-( That was probably too much info, but I’m feeling really grateful right now. THANKS!
