Making Time To Do Nothing

Do you ever simply make time to do nothing? If you haven't, then you MUST! That's exactly what I did this past weekend. Spending time with family and friends and simply relaxing is the type of therapy we all need. Was it difficult to unplug and simply enjoy the day without agendas? To be honest it was a bit odd for me at first but I quickly adapted.

Although I wasn't completely unplugged from electronics, I didn't have Wifi so was literally forced to have fun! Can you imagine telling someone or forcing someone to have fun? Well, there wasn't much coercing needed and you must try it. No schedules, no time restraints, and no appointments is what we all need in order to come back refreshed. It is a time that we need to make for ourselves and for our families. All work and no play makes for misery and resentment. I can remember my parents saying that one day all their hard work would pay off. Unfortunately they passed on too early to truly enjoy the fruits of their labor.

This weekend was a wonderful reminder that we must take time off to do simply nothing. Your work, your job, your website and everything else will be there when you come back. You will look at it in a different light and perhaps enjoy it more. It's not much fun to look at your work as a miserable task. Instead you should enjoy what you do daily and in order to continue to enjoy what you do, you must take some time off to simply unwind. Does it have to be several days? Absolutely not!

Making the effort to take time off is essential. It can be several hours a day, one day a week or an entire weekend or more. The point is to make time to simply do nothing. Enjoy your time with your family and friends. Simply sit still and enjoy your surroundings. Take notice of the beauty that surrounds you which we tend to neglect when we are running in twenty different directions. It doesn't matter where you live, there is beauty right outside your window. There's beauty all around you.

Make a pact with yourself and your family to take time to do nothing. Start today and take a few minutes to simply relax. Slowly move up to hours, then move up to a day or two. The time is needed for you, your health and your peace of mind. Most importantly, enjoy the time and try not to force it upon yourself or anyone around you since that will defeat the purpose.

Enjoy and make each day better than the one that preceded it. You can do it! Have fun!

PS..Notice the photo above…it was taken while I was enjoying my time doing simply nothing! :)

Dr. Mommy, I’ve had to learn the importance of “doing nothing” this year – realizing that while I LOVE what I do now (speaking & writing), I can get so wrapped up in it and spend hours at my laptop working on things for business…and sometimes I really need to just pull away and do blissfully nothing. Great encouraging post!

When I was a kid we had a family summer cabin, just one room and a bathroom. It was not insulated and very primative–just a place to get out of the rain. There was no phone, no television, and a transistor radio was barely audible and not worth the effort. After even a few days together as a family at the cabin, our family seemed to revitalize. It seemed we all had better attitudes about life in general.

That’s awesome Laurie…thanks so much for sharing! This time away was something our family needed for quite some time…although we are always together {homeschool & chiro office attached to home} it was great to see them interact in different surroundings and simply enjoy God’s playground:)
