Since sharing my last post on natural mosquito repellent, I’ve been asked if this formula worked on animals as well. Since the formula involves therapeutic grade essential oils it is safe for animals. However, I found a different combination to work much better as a flea repellant. The important factor is the use of therapeutic grade essential oils, you will not get the same results with over the counter essential oils.
We’ve used all these suggestions I mention below and they work much better than the over the counter flea repellents. Most importantly all of these suggestion are natural as opposed to the chemicals that are found in the prescription and over the counter products. With that said, this is the combination that has worked for the pets in our home.
For Topical Use:
1-2 drops of Clove Essential Oil
1-2 drops of Lemon Essential Oil
1-2 drops of Cinnamon Essential Oil
1-2 drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil
1-2 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil
2 oz of mineral oil or extra virgin olive oil
Mix well and apply to coat of animal.
For Spray Version:
1-2 drops of the following essential oils:
Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Orange, Grapefruit, Lemon, Spearmint (can find them here)
Add water to a small spray bottle
Shake well and spray on pet and areas where they sleep.
For areas they have bitten or raw spots in their coat:
Use lavender essential oil diluted with mineral or extra virgin olive oil place on a clean cloth and rubbed on area. This combination will ease the pain and itch and help the animal to heal.
Add iodized salt and work into the rug fibers.
Let sit overnight.
